EXPLORING CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE MATHEMATICS LEARNING STYLES IN RURAL EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT CENTRES: A CASE STUDY OF OR TAMBO INLAND DISTRICT, SOUTH AFRICA

This study investigated culturally responsive mathematics learning styles in rural early childhood development centres within the OR Tambo Inland District of South Africa. Recognizing the unique cultural contexts of these communities, the research aimed to identify effective learning strategies that enhance mathematical understanding among young learners. The study adopted Vygotsky’s theory of social constructivism, which emphasised the collaborative nature of learning by the construction of knowledge through social discussion. Through a qualitative research approach, the research employed a case study design, interviews and classroom observations. The study’s sample included four practitioners from two rural ECD centres which were purposefully selected as information-rich participants of the study. Findings revealed that integrating local cultural practices and languages into mathematics instruction significantly improves engagement and comprehension among children. The study highlighted the importance of adapting teaching methods to reflect the cultural backgrounds of students, thereby promoting inclusive educational environments. This research contributes to the broader discourse on culturally relevant pedagogy, offering practical recommendations for early childhood educators to foster mathematical skills while respecting and celebrating cultural diversity. Based on the findings, the study recommended that practitioners should be equipped with knowledge and skills for developing a learning environment for effective use of diverse mathematics learning styles in rural ECD centres.
