The withdrawal of the given: philosophy as a way of life and what stands in for it

Two pictures of philosophy pass for the thing itself: philosophy as a literary genre, and philosophy as a field of research. Both give recognition the authority to settle whether philosophy has occurred. This article says what philosophy is before it is either: a way of life that begins in the withdrawal of the given, the experience in which what one knows ceases to be exempt from the question. From that beginning it follows that the academic study of philosophy is a science of its object in the way military history is a science of war, and that it stands in for the practice whenever the deposit it preserves is held as the measure that need not answer; that the sophists' promise, excellence acquired from those who teach it, is the structure of the modern department; that recognition which certifies is social while recognition which is philosophical does not certify; and that there is no peer review in philosophy, since a philosophy that emerges from the withdrawal of the given leaves no measure exempt from the question on which a peer could stand as its judge. Hegel on Kant is examined as the apparent counter-example and shown to state, in the Logic, the only deference a philosopher can pay: to enter the strength of the opponent. The last section places the language model among the routes by which philosophy is practised and shared.
