From Taxonomies to Generative Architecture: Language Personality Theory and What a Theory of Personality Should Explain.
Personality taxonomies provide scientifically valuable frameworks for describing andpredicting individual differences, but between-person structure does not by itselfuniquely specify a constrained architecture operating within persons. Language Personality Theory (LPT) is presented as an empirically open, architecture-first workedexample. It treats language phenomenology and naïve linguistic organization as substantive but defeasible constraints on a candidate personality architecture, not asproof of psychological or neural ontology. LPT proposes eight manifestations organized by three bipolar coordinates—Natural–Social, Intrapersonal–Interpersonal, andObjective–Subjective—and represents their relations in the Personality Cube, a constrained reference geometry. Conditional on accepting this eight-position architecture and its coordinate assignments, exactly 28 unordered pairwise structural relations follow: 12 one-dimensional, 12 two-dimensional, and 4 three-dimensional. Interpreting these relations as psychologically distinguishable contradiction classes is anadditional testable hypothesis, not a consequence established by the geometry. Moreassumption-dependent extensions propose that recurrent handling of relations maycontribute, through repeated behavior or states and resulting regularities, to traitlike phenotypes; that the Cube’s 1–3–3–1 distance structure, combined with a separate accessibility–distance hypothesis, motivates eight idealized configurations; thatperson-specific architectures may bridge within-person and cross-person description;and that developmental transformations remain second-order hypotheses requiringadditional premises. The manuscriptthereforedevelopsamodularempiricalresearchprogram requiring independentoperationalization, comparison with plausible alternatives, replication, person-specific and longitudinal evidence where appropriate, andexplicit asymmetric localization of failure. More broadly, personality theories maybe evaluated not only by their descriptive and predictive performance but also bywhether explicit architectural constraints yield discriminating, independently testableconsequences and informative conditions of failure, alongside explanatory adequacy, coherence, and empirical support.
