REIMAGINING VOCAL PEDAGOGY: A COMPETENCY-BASED FRAMEWORK FOR SINGER FORMATION

Contemporary singer education continues to be largely grounded in traditional models of vocal pedagogy that prioritize technical proficiency and artistic performance. While these foundations remain indispensable, the evolving realities of twenty-first-century musical practice demand broader professional competencies that extend beyond vocal technique. Professional singers are increasingly expected to function as performers, educators, collaborators, entrepreneurs, digital practitioners, and reflective lifelong learners. This paper argues that existing approaches to vocal pedagogy do not sufficiently address these expanding expectations and therefore proposes a competency-based perspective for reimagining singer formation. Employing a conceptual methodology, the study synthesizes scholarship from vocal pedagogy, voice science, competency-based education, music education, and professional learning to develop the Competency-Based Framework for Singer Formation (CBFSF). The framework identifies five interrelated domains of competence: technical-vocal competence, musicianship and interpretive competence, professional competence, reflective competence, and personal-artistic identity competence. Rather than replacing established traditions of voice training, the framework broadens their educational scope by integrating technical excellence with transferable professional capabilities required for contemporary musical practice. The paper further discusses the implications of the framework for curriculum design, teaching, and assessment in higher music education, advocating a shift toward learner-centered and outcome-oriented pedagogies. By re-conceptualizing singer education through a competency-based lens, this study contributes a practical and theoretically grounded model that prepares singers for sustainable, adaptable, and contextually responsive professional careers while preserving the enduring principles of healthy vocal artistry.
