Digital Transformation of Teacher Education under Vikshit Bharat @2047

Abstract India's vision of Vikshit Bharat @2047 rests on building a digitally empowered, innovation-driven, and sustainable economy in which artificial intelligence, e-commerce, and digital infrastructure serve as engines of inclusive growth. Realising this vision depends critically on the quality of human capital that education systems produce, and teacher education stands at the centre of that pipeline. This paper examines how the digital transformation envisaged under Vikshit Bharat @2047 is reshaping teacher education in India, using the reforms introduced under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 as the entry point. It discusses how national digital platforms such as DIKSHA, SWAYAM, and PM eVIDYA, together with emerging technologies including artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality, blockchain, and the Internet of Things, are creating new possibilities for personalised, inclusive, and lifelong teacher development. The paper also situates these developments within the wider digital economy, arguing that a technologically competent teaching workforce is a precondition for the commerce, innovation, and productivity gains that Vikshit Bharat @2047 anticipates. At the same time, the paper identifies significant risks, including the digital divide, uneven digital literacy among teachers, and adverse effects of excessive technology use on mental well-being, sleep, and attention. Drawing on secondary literature and policy documents, the paper proposes a blended and sustainability-oriented framework for teacher education that combines digital tools with face-to-face mentoring, structured digital wellness training, and continuous monitoring of technology use. It concludes that India's digital future will be strongest where digital ambition is matched with digital responsibility, and where teacher education is treated as strategic national infrastructure rather than a peripheral concern.
