The Observer Also Breathes

Much of contemporary science describes physical, biological, and social systems with extraordinary precision, yet it often preserves an ontological asymmetry: the observed object is decomposed into material processes, whereas the organism that observes, formulates categories, assigns value, produces diagnoses, and writes the description remains implicitly positioned outside the same causal chain. This article proposes eliminating that asymmetry. The point of departure is a material ontology of non-equilibrium. A distinction is made between a code-token, a degradable material occurrence, and a code-lineage, the historical continuity produced through successive retransmissions. Organisms are treated operationally as transient non-equilibrium configurations within which maintenance, transformation, and retransmission become physically possible. This formulation is consistent with work on the thermodynamics of persistent copying, according to which the production of specific polymer copies that remain physically separable from their templates requires work and non-equilibrium conditions. From this basis, a second recursion is examined: organisms produce external configurations that may persist, modify later organisms, and, in humans, become historically reconfigurable, executable in the absence of their original producers, re-executed by substitutable organisms and machines, coupled to access to conditions required for the organism’s non-equilibrium, and anticipated by organisms before the next external execution. Niche construction and ecological inheritance demonstrate that organism–environment recursion is not uniquely human; therefore, any possible post-Neolithic distinctiveness must be sought in the composition and scale of these properties rather than in any isolated mechanism. A descriptive topology is proposed based on recurrent co-presence, executable relations in absence, material access mediation, and causal closability. The hypothesis is that a population of billions of organisms can preserve small local bodily worlds while allowing absent configurations to acquire planetary causal reach over their trajectories. External relations may therefore traverse precisely the small co-present nuclei within which feeding, protection, care, and human retransmission continue to be materially realized. The article introduces an additional requirement: the scientific observer must be included in the same ontology. Reading this article, criticizing it, accepting it, or rejecting it are likewise material occurrences enacted by non-equilibrium organisms already modified by previous occurrences. This does not entail epistemic relativism. A claim may still be false. It means only that the production, selection, and evaluation of claims receive no ontological exemption. Within this framework, psychopathology appears as a possible consequence rather than a starting point. The same organized matter that makes orientation, anticipation, approach, defense, and continuity possible is the only matter through which persistent configurations can also generate disorganization. The article proposes operationalizable variables, distinguishes the framework from allostatic load, Social Safety Theory, evolutionary mismatch, niche construction, and externalist psychiatry, and derives falsifiable predictions.
