Healthcare professionals’ practices, perceptions, and policy contexts of neonatal twin cobedding: a cross-sectional study

Background Twin cobedding is considered a developmental care practice in neonatal settings however little is known in relation to the practices and perceptions of neonatal healthcare professionals. Purpose To explore neonatal twin cobedding practices and healthcare professionals’ perceptions. Methods An anonymous online exploratory survey was developed using Qualtrics and distributed electronically to healthcare professionals across hospital and community settings. Data were collected using a self-selected convenience sample. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, exploratory factor analysis and univariable linear regression. Results A total of 263 respondents consented and commenced the survey, of whom 228 completed in full. Twin cobedding practices varied across hospital settings. Although 83% (n = 181) of respondents supported formal twin cobedding policies, only 17% (n = 42) reported that their workplace had a policy. Twins were frequently separated into different areas within units, yet 81% (n = 177) of respondents believed separation could negatively affect twins. Respondents self-reported greater satisfaction with care when twins were placed together. The small group of community-based respondents reported observing regular use of twin cobedding in home settings. Conclusion Healthcare professionals generally hold positive views toward twin cobedding and support the development of evidence-based guidelines in hospitals. Separation of twins in clinical settings remains a concern and warrants review. Clinical trial registration Not Applicable.
