The Gig Economy And Financial Inclusion In India: From Flexibility To Financial Resilience

Abstract India’s expanding gig economy is reshaping employment through platform-based work, flexibility platform-mediated control and limited financial resilience. This paper examines whether gig work can translate into genuine financial empowerment rather than digital access alone. It develops three core perspectives—freedom versus invisible control, digital inclusion versus financial resilience, and today’s gig economy versus tomorrow’s AI—supported by three additional dimensions concerning unpredictability, financial power and the hidden cost of waiting and availability. Using secondary evidence from NITI Aayog, the International Labour Organization, official financial sources and relevant research, the study analyses the relationship between gig work, financial inclusion and economic resilience. It argues that meaningful financial inclusion must extend beyond digital transactions towards financial security, worker agency, suitable financial products and long-term economic mobility, within the broader vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.
