Comparison of Biopsy Specimen Weights Obtained Using Different Ultrasound-Guided Breast Biopsy Devices and Sampling Techniques

Objectives: Accurate biopsy results are essential for diagnosis of breast cancer, selecting an appropriate biopsy device is critical. The aim of this study was to investigate the differences in tissue specimen weight obtained different biopsy devices and needle gauges, as well as their diagnostic performance. Materials and Methods: Specimen weights from EleVation 10-, 12-, and 14-gauge, as well as Celero 12-gauge, and 16-gauge Magnum for analysis. Pathological diagnoses and immunohistochemical subtypes of biopsy specimens were compared with surgical specimens to assess diagnostic concordance. Tissue specimen weight and diagnostic performance were also compared between the EleVation and Celero 12-gauge systems. Results: Ninety-eight patients were included in this study. Median specimen weights were 139.0 mg with EleVation 10-gauge, 84.0 mg with EleVation 12-gauge, 40.5 mg with EleVation 14-gauge, 44.8 mg with Celero 12-gauge, and 8.0 mg with Magnum 16-gauge. Among the 12-gauge the EleVation yielded significantly heavier specimens than the Celero system ( P < .0001). Despite differences in specimen weight, no significant differences were observed in diagnostic performance between biopsy devices or needle gauges. Pathological concordance between biopsy and surgical specimens was high across all groups. Conclusion: Although the EleVation system obtained larger tissue specimens, all the biopsy devices and needle gauges that were evaluated, demonstrated comparable diagnostic performance and reliable tissue sampling, for breast lesions.
