ROLE OF HERBAL DRUGS AS BIOENHANCERS TO ENHANCE THE BIOAVAILABILITY IN VARIOUS SYSTEMS OF HUMAN BODY
ABSTRACTABSTRACT Bioenhancers are substances that enhance the bioavailability and efficacy of drugs without possessingsignificant pharmacological activity of their own at the administered dose. Herbal bioenhancers have emerged as animportant area of pharmaceutical and biomedical research due to their ability to improve drug absorption, reducedosage requirements, minimize adverse effects, and overcome drug resistance. Natural bioenhancers obtained frommedicinal plants such as black pepper, ginger, turmeric, aloe vera, cumin, liquorice, and garlic have demonstratedsignificant effects on drug metabolism and transport mechanisms. The present thesis focuses on the role of herbaldrugs as bioenhancers, their mechanisms of action, applications in modern therapeutics, advantages, limitations, andfuture prospects. Particular emphasis has been given to piperine, curcumin, quercetin, and glycyrrhizin, which haveshown remarkable potential in improving the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of several drugs.Herbal bioenhancers have become increasingly important in the treatment of infectious diseases, cancer, cardiovascular disorders, and metabolic disorders. This thesis highlights the growing importance of herbalbioenhancers in modern pharmaceutical sciences and discusses their role in improving therapeutic outcomes whilesupporting the development of safer and more cost-effective treatment strategies. Keywords: bioenhancers, piperine, herbal, cost effectiveThis paper synthesizes the supplied thesis as a focused narrative review. It emphasizes piperine, curcumin, ginger, aloe vera, quercetin and glycyrrhizin and compares their reported bioenhancing mechanisms, pharmaceuticalapplications, advantages and limitations. The review indicates that herbal bioenhancers may influence intestinalabsorption, metabolic enzymes, membrane permeability and efflux transporters. However, the same mechanisms canproduce drug–herb interactions, making standardization, pharmacokinetic characterization and clinical safetyassessment essential.
