Political Marketing in Rajasthan: Strategies, Implications, and Democratic Outcomes
Political Marketing in Rajasthan: Strategies, Implications, and Democratic Outcomes Mithlesh Kumari * Introduction : Political marketing has emerged as a critical dimension of contemporary democratic practice, bridging the realms of politics, communication, and consumer behavior. Defined broadly, political marketing applies the principles and techniques of commercial marketing to political campaigns, aiming to influence voter perceptions, mobilize support, and enhance electoral outcomes (Newman, 1999; Lees-Marshment, 2020). Globally, political marketing has evolved alongside mass media and, more recently, digital technology, transforming the ways in which political actors communicate with citizens, present their policies, and manage party image (Scammell, 2014). In India, political marketing has historically reflected the nation’s social complexity, integrating caste, religion, regionalism, and language into campaign strategies, while also adapting to technological innovations such as social media platforms and mobile communication (Jaffrelot & Verniers, 2019). Rajasthan, a state marked by its vast geographical expanse and diverse population, provides a compelling case study for examining political marketing. The state has alternated governance primarily between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress (INC), creating a highly competitive political landscape. Rajasthan’s electoral behavior is influenced by a complex interplay of caste affiliations, urban-rural divides, literacy rates, and socio-economic inequalities. Consequently, political parties in the state have increasingly relied on both traditional and digital marketing strategies to engage voters, tailor messages, and mobilize support. For instance, the 2023 Rajasthan Assembly elections highlighted the sophisticated use of WhatsApp campaigns, social media outreach, and influencer marketing to directly influence voter decision-making and manage party image (BBC News, 2023; Pulitzer Center, 2024). The central research problem of this paper is to investigate the extent to which political marketing strategies influence electoral outcomes and democratic engagement in Rajasthan. Specifically, the study asks: How do political marketing practices shape voter behavior, participation, and perceptions of democracy in the state? The objectives are threefold: (1) to trace the evolution of political marketing strategies in Rajasthan from traditional to digital methods, (2) to analyze their impact on voter engagement and electoral outcomes, and (3) to evaluate their broader implications for the democratic process, including ethical, social, and regulatory concerns. By situating Rajasthan as a microcosm of broader Indian political trends, this study contributes to an understanding of how localized strategies interact with national political marketing practices to shape democratic governance. *Assistant professor, Govt girls college dholpur
