Borehole Mining for Natural Flake Graphite: An Integrated Extraction–Selective Liberation–Pre-beneficiation Strategy

Natural graphite is a critical and strategic raw material whose commercial value depends not only on carbon grade and total recovery, but also on flake-size distribution, morphology and downstream processability. Conventional mine-to-concentrate routes commonly expose graphite-bearing ore to blasting, loading, crushing, grinding and repeated regrinding before valuable mineral fractions are recovered. This paper develops a graphite-specific technological framework in which borehole mining (BHM) is integrated with selective hydraulic liberation, hydraulic lifting, early classification and subsequent beneficiation. The central engineering proposition is that moving part of the liberation duty to the extraction interface can reduce unnecessary bulk comminution, preserve a higher-value product-size distribution and decrease the mass of barren material entering downstream processing. The paper defines the BHM process architecture, contrasts it with conventional mine-to-concentrate practice, identifies the geological and operating window required for selective hydraulic liberation, and establishes quantitative performance criteria covering flake preservation, liberation, recovery, fines generation, specific energy, water management, environmental performance and product value. A controlled comparative validation programme is defined to quantify the magnitude of the advantage for individual deposits. BHM is therefore positioned not as a replacement for beneficiation, but as an upstream process-intensification strategy that couples extraction with the first stage of mineral-value preservation. The framework provides a practical basis for graphite pilot testing, techno-economic assessment and future European demonstration of lower-disturbance, value-preserving extraction.
