Chemical constituents from the dried rhizomes of Iris domestica (L.) Goldblatt & Mabb. and their chemotaxonomic significance
A phytochemical investigation of the ethanol extract of the Iris domestica (L.) Goldblatt & Mabb rhizome resulted in the isolation of twenty-five compounds by normal and reversed-phase silica gel column chromatography, medium-pressure liquid chromatography (MPLC), and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. These compounds include eight phenolics ( 1 – 8 ), twelve phenylpropanoids ( 9 – 20 ), and five iridal-type triterpenoids ( 21 – 25 ). The chemical structures of these compounds were elucidated by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry (MS), and compared with previously reported literature data. Compounds 1 , 4 , 5 and 8 – 14 were isolated for the first time from the Iridaceae family, compounds 2 and 15 were isolated for the first time from the genus Iris , and compound 3 was isolated for the first time from I. domestica . The chemotaxonomic significance of these isolated compounds was also discussed.
