CLINICAL PROFILE OF ANEMIA AND ITS ASSOCIATION WITH GLYCEMIC CONTROL

Background: The aim is to determine the prevalence of anemia in patients with type 2 diabetes and evaluating the risk ofanemia based on age, gender, and glycemic control. Materials and Methods: Patients with type 2 diabetes who wereadmitted to Goa Medical College and attended the outpatient department between January 1, 2021, and December 31, 2021,made up the study group. Groups of patients were created based on gender and glycemic status. Hemoglobin (Hb) andglycated hemoglobin (HbA1C) levels were assessed. For men, a Hb level < 13.0 g/dL and for women, < 12.0 g/dL indicatedthe presence of anemia. Results: The prevalence of anemia is significantly greater in diabetic females (53.3%) than indiabetic males (46.7%). The mean duration of Daibetes Mellitus in the study participants was 10.0 ± 3.06 years. The meanage of the patients were 64.8 ± 4.43 years. This indicates that the risk of anemia increases with age. Conclusion: Theprevalence of anemia in the diabetic population can be decreased by screening for anemia at the time of diabetes diagnosis, diabetic medications compliance, and raising awareness of the risk of anemia and other complications in diabetic patients.
