Development and physicochemical evaluation of shampoo with Melon-of-São-Caetano (Momordica charantia L.) extract

Objective: The objective was to develop a shampoo with the addition of an aqueous extract of the leaves of M. charantia L. For the organoleptic characterization of the extract, color, viscosity, odor and clarity were determined. Methods: The physicochemical characteristics evaluated were the dry residue, pH and relative density and the phytochemical characterization was carried out by determining characteristic chemical groups (phenolic compounds, tannins, alkaloids and flavonoids). In the physical-chemical characterization of the shampoo obtained, the following were analyzed: pH, viscosity and foam index. Results: The vegetable drug obtained showed a yield of 21.93% ±0.45%; humidity of 7.25% ±0.12 and ash of 14.11% ±0.53%. The aqueous extract had the following characteristics: pH 8.48 ±0.01; density 1.0113 ±0.0012 g/cm3; extractives content 2.12% ±0.02% and positive reaction for phenolic compounds and alkaloids and slightly positive reaction for tannins and flavonoids. The shampoo had a pH of 5.8 ±0.14; a relative density of 1.01 ± 0.03 g/cm3; viscosity of 2093.33 cP and adequate organoleptic characteristics. There were no changes in the centrifuge test and the foam index showed consistency and density with slow decay over time, ranging from 8.5 cm to 5.0 cm after 30 minutes. Conclusions: Thus, the shampoo presented a pleasant appearance and promising rheological and stability characteristics.
