NEP 2020, Digital Transformation and Skill-Based Education: A Roadmap for Viksit Bharat @2047

The vision of Viksit Bharat @2047 represents India's aspiration to emerge as a developed, inclusive, innovative, technologically advanced and knowledge-driven nation by the centenary of its independence. The achievement of this vision depends substantially on the quality of human capital developed through education. School education, in particular, has a foundational role because the students educated today will become the professionals, entrepreneurs, researchers, teachers, administrators, innovators and responsible citizens who will shape India's social and economic development in the coming decades. In this context, the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, digital transformation and skill-based education have emerged as three interconnected dimensions of educational reform. NEP 2020 seeks to transform Indian education through a holistic, multidisciplinary, flexible and competency-oriented approach. It emphasizes foundational literacy and numeracy, experiential learning, critical thinking, creativity, vocational education, multilingualism, technology integration and the development of 21st-century competencies. The policy also recognizes that digital technologies can support teaching-learning, assessment, teacher development and access to educational resources. At the same time, the rapid development of artificial intelligence, digital platforms, virtual learning environments, educational applications and data-driven systems is changing the nature of teaching and learning. Digital transformation, however, should not be understood merely as the replacement of textbooks with screens or classrooms with online platforms. It requires a fundamental reconsideration of pedagogy, curriculum, assessment, teacher competencies and learner participation. Skill-based education is equally important for preparing learners for a changing world of work. Traditional education that primarily emphasizes the accumulation and reproduction of information may not adequately prepare students for employment, entrepreneurship, innovation and lifelong learning. Future-ready learners require a combination of academic knowledge, digital literacy, communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, financial awareness, entrepreneurial thinking, vocational competencies and social-emotional skills. The present paper critically examines the relationship between NEP 2020, digital transformation and skill-based education in the context of Viksit Bharat @2047. The study adopts a qualitative conceptual and analytical research design based on secondary sources, including policy documents, government publications, international reports and relevant academic literature. The analysis identifies four major dimensions of transformation: policy reform, technological transformation, competency development and educational equity. The study argues that technology can significantly enhance educational opportunities, but its effectiveness depends upon teacher preparedness, appropriate pedagogy, infrastructure, accessibility, digital safety and meaningful integration into the curriculum. UNESCO similarly emphasizes that technology should support education rather than replace human interaction and that equitable access, appropriate governance and teacher capacity are essential conditions for effective digital transformation.
