Academic Motivation as a Mediator Between Mental Health and Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Among University Students

University students experience substantial academic and psychological demands, yet many remain reluctant to seek professional psychological help. This study examined the associations among positive mental health (MH), academic motivation, and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help and tested whether academic motivation statistically mediated the association between positive MH and help-seeking attitudes. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 742 university students in Vietnam between May 27, 2025, and January 9, 2026. Positive MH was assessed using the Factors and thirteen Dimensions Reflecting Mental Health as Flourishing scale, academic motivation using the Short Academic Motivation Scale (SAMS), and help-seeking attitudes using the Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale–Short Form (ATSPPH-SF). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, group comparisons, Pearson correlations, and partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Positive MH was positively associated with attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help (β = .347, p < .001) and academic motivation (β = .223, p < .001). Academic motivation was also positively associated with help-seeking attitudes (β = .338, p < .001). A significant indirect association between positive MH and help-seeking attitudes through academic motivation was observed (β = .075, p < .001), consistent with partial statistical mediation. The model explained 28.7% of the variance in help-seeking attitudes. The results indicate that positive MH and academic motivation are statistically related to students’ attitudes toward professional psychological help. However, because the study was cross-sectional and assessed attitudes rather than actual service use, the findings do not establish temporal or causal relationships.[El estudiantado universitario experimenta importantes exigencias académicas y psicológicas.
