Magnetoelectric coupling effect in the electrocatalytic water splitting
With the ongoing progress in the process of electrochemical water splitting, it is crucial to better control the activation barrier and reduce the overpotential of electrocatalysis. Extensive attention has been directed toward the magnetic field, primarily because of its multifunctionality, non-contact operation, and non-invasive features, which can serve as an in situ adjustment aid to enhance the catalytic efficiency in electrocatalytic water splitting. This review summarizes the application of the magnetoelectric coupling effect in electrocatalytic water splitting and discusses the latest research progress on magnetoelectric coupling effect-based electrocatalysts, including perovskite structure catalysts and spinel structure catalysts. Further in-depth research on the interrelated mechanisms in electrocatalytic water splitting, including crystal structure, bond strength, atomic/molecular orbitals, and electronic spin states. The potential directions for the future development of the magnetoelectric coupling effect in the field of electrocatalysis are prospectively discussed.
