The MOP framework
Professional searching aims to achieve high completeness and precision while minimizing noise. The MOP framework (Mandatory - Optional - Pitfalls) structures search logic across different contexts, from prior-art discovery to invalidity or opposition searches. Mandatory elements capture the core concepts of the subject to be searched. Optional elements refine the search strategy by focusing on specific aspects of the topic. Pitfalls capture ambiguity and conceptual traps that can affect search outcomes. The framework is based on a layered search strategy, which makes the construction of searches and the combination of retrieval methods transparent and reproducible. High-quality searching does not rely on a single query or tool, but on combining complementary search methods, such as professional database searches, citation analysis, native-language queries, web-based searches and AI-assisted tools. Differences between independently generated result sets are used to improve completeness. In practice, the layered search strategy combines linear and non-linear exploration, thereby increasing robustness and completeness.
