Caregiving experiences among family caregivers of lung transplant recipients: a meta-synthesis of qualitative studies

To systematically review and synthesize qualitative evidence on the psychological experiences and caregiving needs of family caregivers of lung transplant recipients. We conducted a systematic search of the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PubMed, Ovid, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Wanfang, CNKI, and VIP databases from database inception to March 2026. All databases were searched with identical time ranges, and no database was restricted to a shorter retrieval period. The study quality was assessed using the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist for Qualitative Research. Data were synthesized using thematic meta-synthesis. Eleven studies were included. The analysis yielded 78 findings, which were grouped into 10 categories and synthesized into three overarching themes: (1) Caregivers endure substantial burdens and multifaceted pressures; (2) Caregivers employ positive coping strategies to adapt to their evolving roles; (3) Caregivers have urgent and diverse needs for comprehensive support. Family caregivers of lung transplant recipients experience significant burdens and have complex, evolving needs. Our findings underscore the critical importance of developing targeted, continuous support systems, including enhanced discharge preparation and transitional care services, to ultimately improve the well-being and quality of life for these caregivers.
