Scientific Imaging
Images and videos are essential tools in scientific work, whether for documenting processes, recording observations, or visualizing measurement results.Regardless of the specific purpose, the future usability of this research data is largely determined by technical and structural processes. This talk highlights key stages in the scientific handling of image and video data. Capture: The interplay of camera parameters and their effect on image quality Encoding: Digital media formats, both lossy and lossless Storage: Handling large volumes of data Archiving: The suitability of different formats for long-term availability Metadata: Criteria for FAIR. Introduction to iFDOs (image FAIR Digital Objects) as an example of FAIR metadata O2A image data flow: An example based on photos and videos with iFDOs. This demonstrates the entire process, from capturing the images and creating the metadata on board the ship, through transporting the data ashore and submitting it to PANGAEA, to its subsequent discoverability in Marine Data
