Combined Surface Hardening Technology in Mechanical Engineering
Abstract— The paper presents the study results on the effect of various surface hardening treatments of 40ХН steel specimens, including ion nitriding, high frequency current (HFC) quenching, and a combined technology, specifically, ion nitriding followed by HFC quenching, on the wear resistance of the surface under dry friction conditions. It is shown that the maximum wear resistance at dry friction without lubrication has been achieved for the specimen subjected to ion nitriding followed by HFC quenching. The mass wear rate was more than twice lower than that of the specimen hardened by HCF quenching alone and 3.2 times lower than that obtained by the ion nitriding.
