Author, editor, or reviewer? A framework for the ethical use of AI in psychological assessment report writing

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly influences psychological assessment report writing workflows, introducing new efficiencies alongside distinct ethical risks. APA offers broad professional and ethical guidance but do not address the specific risks unique to AI-assisted report writing. Building on prior work identifying ethical concerns of AI use in psychology, this article outlines the distinct risks of integrating AI into assessment report workflows. This article then introduces the Assessment Workflow AI Risk Evaluation (AWARE) framework, a four-tier model grounded in automation theory and tailored to distinct ethical risks in this context. AWARE offers psychologists a structured approach to evaluate when and how to ethically integrate AI into report workflows. Recommended safeguards emphasize preserving independent clinical reasoning, maintaining defensibility, ensuring accuracy, and facilitating appropriate client transparency.
