A 17th-Century AD Clinker-Built Vessel from the Bay of Greifswald, Germany: Preliminary Report on the Peenemündung, Fpl. 142 Shipwreck Investigation

This paper presents preliminary results of a development-led archaeological investigation conducted in the Bay of Greifswald, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, which led to the identification of a previously unknown shipwreck site. The site was accidentally discovered in 2023 during pre-construction works for the LNG pipeline. Due to severe time constraints imposed by planned dredging, only a brief archaeological diving campaign could be undertaken. Nevertheless, the investigation allowed for the in situ assessment, recording and protection of a hull fragment belonging to the 17th-century AD clinker-built vessel, as well as recovery of numerous small finds, including several rare artefacts related to ship inventory.
