Pseudofilamentous desmids (Zygnematophyceae, Desmidiaceae) from Atlantic Forest ponds from southern Bahia, Brazil

Abstract Present work consists of a pioneer taxonomic survey of pseudofilamentous desmids in southern Bahia, Brazil. Based on periphytic and planktonic samples collected from ponds in Serra do Conduru State Park, Uruçuca, Bahia, 24 taxa were identified, including first documented occurrences for South America ( Groenbladia undulata var. kriegeri , Hyalotheca burmensis, and Teilingia excavata ) . Moreover, we present a new combination based on previously unknown morphological data: Hyalotheca confervacea comb. nov., a species that is being currently reported for the second time in Brazil after a 78-year gap. Furthermore, we present for the first time details of zygospores of two taxa ( Hyalotheca mucosa var. laevicincta and Hyalotheca tatrica ). This study contributes to our understanding of pseudofilamentous desmid diversity and distribution in Brazil and South America.
