Semantic analysis of Airbnb-experiences: Linking memorable tourism experiences and urban wellness tourism
Urban destinations are increasingly positioned as emerging spaces for wellness tourism, yet the mechanisms through which wellness is constructed and experienced in platform-mediated urban contexts remain underexplored. This study investigates how memorable tourism experience (MTE) dimensions are semantically associated with multi-dimensional wellness meanings within Airbnb-Experiences across four major cities. Drawing on large-scale textual data, we combine semantic similarity modelling and correspondence analysis to identify structural association patterns between experiential attributes and wellness dimensions. The findings reveal that urban wellness is predominantly aligned with social and environmental dimensions rather than spiritual ones, highlighting the relational and place-based character of wellness in cities. Across destinations, Local Culture and Knowledge emerge as dominant experiential drivers, functioning as structural hubs linking experiences to multiple wellness dimensions, while affective elements such as Hedonism operate in a more context-dependent manner. Despite city-level nuances, consistent association patterns suggest that platform-mediated urban experiences are shaped by shared experiential logics. The study advances the conceptualisation of urban wellness tourism as a culturally embedded, socially co-created, and cognitively enriched modality distinct from traditional restorative paradigms. By integrating MTE theory with computational semantic modelling in a platform ecosystem, the research offers a novel analytical framework for examining how digital mediation shapes the construction and memorability of wellness in urban tourism.
