Open studio in dance movement therapy: theoretical and practical foundations of an emerging model—a clinical case study
The Open Studio in Dance Movement Therapy (OS in DMT) is an emerging therapeutic model adapting the principles of the Open Studio in Art Therapy to a movement-based context. This descriptive case study presents the model’s implementation over six years in a special education high school with adolescents with complex learning disabilities. The OS in DMT offers a non-directive, open-group therapeutic space in which movement and creative process constitute the therapeutic centre, with minimal therapist structuring or interpretation. Clinical observations reveal five recurring therapeutic themes: social positioning, self-image and body image, aggression and protection, drive regulation, and initiative and creativity. The paper addresses challenges facing therapists, the distinctive therapeutic stance, clinical implications, and the model’s proposed trans-diagnostic potential. While empirical research is still needed, existing theoretical grounding and clinical observations support the OS in DMT as a model offering unique therapeutic value through embodied creative expression in a group.
