Design-stage supportability assessment of construction equipment: a structural model for improving asset lifecycle performance

Purpose This research aims to propose a quantitative digraph-based framework and create a Construction Equipment Supportability Index (CESI) for design-stage evaluation. Design/methodology/approach Supportability factors and subfactors have been identified through literature review and expert group interviews. A digraph-based model has been developed to represent interdependencies among factors. A CESI has been calculated using the digraph and matrix method. A case example including a comparison of two 21-ton hydraulic excavators from different original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) has been illustrated. Findings Eight main supportability factors, with 36 subfactors, have been identified. The analytical hierarchy process was used to determine the relative weights of the factors. The digraph model effectively captured the interrelationships among supportability factors, and the CESI values for two excavators have been computed. Sensitivity analysis has revealed that improvements in reliability, spare parts design and logistics features in the design offer significant CESI gains. Practical implications The proposed framework can help OEMs, asset managers and project stakeholders to include supportability metrics into design reviews, procurement strategies and lifecycle planning. By addressing critical factors early, organizations may reduce downtime, optimize maintenance resources and extend the service life of their assets. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the first studies to incorporate graph theory and matrix approach-based structural modeling and design-stage supportability evaluation in construction equipment.
