Why Sound Change Begins: Pressure, Resistance, and Actuation

This preprint introduces a unified pressure–resistance mechanism of sound change and proposes a threshold‑based account of actuation. The model formalises how phonetic, social, and demographic pressures interact with prestige norms, identity policing, and institutional resistance. Actuation occurs when pressure exceeds resistance, producing a tipping point that initiates rapid adoption.

Abstract

This preprint introduces a unified pressure–resistance mechanism of sound change and proposes a threshold‑based account of actuation. The model formalises how phonetic, social, and demographic pressures interact with prestige norms, identity policing, and institutional resistance. Actuation occurs when pressure exceeds resistance, producing a tipping point that initiates rapid adoption.
