Psychometric properties and social correlates of the revictimizer racism scale in the brazilian context

Contemporary manifestations of racism often appear in subtle forms, one of them is the accusations that Black people exploit victimhood narratives. The Revictimizer Racism Scale (RRS), developed in Brazil, was designed to capture this nuanced form of prejudice. The present study aimed to strengthen the psychometric foundations of the RRS and investigate the relationship between its score and sociodemographic, psychosocial, and attitudinal variables. The validity of the RSS, based on internal structure and external variables, reliability, and measurement invariance, was evaluated in a sample of 272 Brazilian adults. Using estimation techniques suitable for ordinal data (WLSMV), we confirmed a unidimensional structure and high internal consistency. Critically, the RRS demonstrated measurement invariance across gender, race, and political orientation, supporting its use in group comparisons. Higher RRS scores were observed among men and right-wing participants. Moreover, revictimizer racism was associated with older age, lower education, stronger beliefs in White-Black resource competition, greater perceived exposure to ethnically diverse environments, less support for racial quota policies, and lower internal/greater external motivation to respond without prejudice. A regression model integrating these variables explained 50% of the scale’s variance. The RRS demonstrated good psychometric properties, establishing itself as an instrument with strong validity and reliability for measuring revictimizer racism, a subtle manifestation of prejudice aligned with contemporary social norms.
