Interventions to promote physical activity in older adults after hip fractures: a scoping review

Background This scoping review aimed to map intervention studies promoting physical activity (PA) after hip fractures or evaluating PA as a primary or secondary outcome, describe intervention characteristics and PA assessment methods, and identify gaps. Methods The protocol was registered on the Open Science Framework. PubMed, CINAHL, PEDro, and Ichushi-Web were searched for peer-reviewed original articles published from January 2010 to September 2025. Data on study and intervention characteristics, PA-related outcomes, and measurement methods were descriptively summarised. Results Ten reports representing nine studies met the eligibility criteria. Interventions included exercise training (n = 4), behaviour change support (n = 2), and multicomponent approaches (n = 3). Intervention components, initiation timing, settings, providers, frequency, and duration varied. PA was measured using devices (n = 6) or self-reports (n = 3). PA findings varied across studies and outcome measures, even within individual studies. Few studies examined similar interventions using comparable PA outcomes, measurement methods, and assessment time points. Conclusions Heterogeneity in intervention characteristics, PA outcomes, measurement methods, and assessment time points limited cross-study comparisons. Future studies should align PA outcomes and measurement methods with the targeted PA aspect. Detailed reporting of time points, measurement procedures, and analytic methods would facilitate cross-study comparisons.
