Guardians of Health: The Role of Papua’s Tiga Tungku Leaders in Health Care Services Regarding Stunting Prevention

Introduction: Stunting remains high in Papua, Indonesia, while sociocultural factors shaping health service use remain underexplored. This study explored the role of tiga tungku leaders in child health services and stunting prevention. Methods: A descriptive qualitative study was conducted in Jayapura from August to October 2024. Eighteen religious, traditional, and community leaders were recruited through maximum variation sampling and interviewed. Data were analysed using inductive thematic analysis. Trustworthiness was supported through triangulation, peer debriefing, thick description, and systematic documentation. Results: Four themes were identified: the composition of tiga tungku leaders, their community roles, their roles in health services, and their involvement in health programmes. Tiga tungku leaders shaped community attitudes and health-related behaviours by translating health messages into culturally acceptable advice, building trust, encouraging mothers to use services, and mobilising support for nutrition and growth monitoring. Discussion: Collaboration with tiga tungku leaders may support culturally responsive stunting prevention in Papua.
