The Mirror Hypothesis: Operator Context as a Growth Medium for AI Agent Intelligence
Position paper. The practice of building personal AI agents develops in two opposite directions: accumulating rules and prescriptions, or accumulating knowledge of the specific human operator. The Mirror Hypothesis states that agent effectiveness grows with the depth of operator knowledge (history, goals, values, decisions, errors, thinking style), while excess operational prescription narrows the space of emergent strategies and degrades intelligence. Three falsifiable claims, a 30-day comparative protocol, objections (privacy, overfitting, manipulation), a distinction between value boundaries and operational micromanagement, and a reference frame from cybernetics (Wiener, Ashby, Bateson, von Foerster, McCulloch, Polanyi, Maturana & Varela, Licklider, Engelbart) to contemporary alignment literature.
