VAFB-1994-28: Final Report Cultural Resources Assessment of the Titan Fiber Optic Transmission System Vandenberg Air Force Base Santa Barbara County, California

This document is a Section 106 report for the proposed installation of the Titan Fiber Optic Transmission System on Vandenberg Air Force Base Santa Barbara County, California. This report builds on previous background research that was conducted specifically for this project in May 1994. The aim of the background research was to obtain information on previously surveyed tracts within or near the area of potential effect and to determine if any previously recorded properties were present. The background research indicated that the area of potential effect of the Titan Fiber Optic Transmission System was entirely covered by previous surveys. Therefore, no further survey work is necessary for the proposed project. The report discusses thirteen (13) previously identified prehistoric archaeological sites that area within or immediately adjacent to the area of potential effects (APE), however, dismisses eleven (11) of them for various reasons. This results in the report recommending that two (2) sites, CA-SBA-2325 and -2446 be evaluated to determine their eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places. The report also recommends that archaeological and Native American monitors be present to observe all ground disturbing activity near the archaeological sites to ensure that no sites are impacted.
