Civilization Does Not Stand Still: From CivStructure to CivDynamics - Why a Structural Theory of Civilization Opens into a Theory of Change / 文明不会静止:从 CivStructure 到 CivDynamics - 为什么文明结构理论会自然打开时间与变化维度
CivStructure changed the research object from civilizational points to civilizational nodes. That move contains a temporal consequence. A node is not defined only by location or substance, but by relations, load-bearing effects, scale, and generative history. Once those relations are indexed by time, the structural object becomes a process: N_s becomes N_s(t). Human civilization adds a second asymmetry: civilizational duration can extend across centuries or millennia, while every living human carrier is temporary. A civilization that persists must therefore replace carriers repeatedly and transfer memory, authority, skills, institutions, and relations across generations and often across places. The paper formalizes this transition through five linked ideas. First, persistence is not state invariance. Second, long-term persistence in changing environments may require transformation, producing a Civilizational Stasis Paradox: absolute preservation of every state variable can undermine the ability to remain viable. Third, migration, carrier replacement, and re-embedding are normal mechanisms rather than automatic signs of extinction. Fourth, distributed redundancy can function as civilizational network insurance against single-point failure while simultaneously creating cascade risks. Fifth, civilizational identity is treated as multidimensional continuity rather than a binary label attached to one capital, dynasty, territory, or population snapshot. Four heuristic cases make the distinctions visible without serving as proofs: Pompeii distinguishes city-node destruction from Roman civilizational extinction; the Southern Song illustrates relocation and dynastic reconstitution; the Chongzhen southward-relocation question is used only as a constrained counterfactual about decision windows; and North Sentinel Island shows why low connectivity can coexist with selective material permeability. The paper concludes that dynamics is not something that happens to civilization from the outside. For a civilization carried by finite, mobile, generational human beings, dynamic transformation is one of the ways structure persists through time.
