Evolution of striking dominance in Ultimate Fighting Championship: A cross-temporal analysis of factors associated with victory

This study examined the evolution of action frequencies associated with victory in UFC bouts across three distinct eras (2003–2004, 2013–2014, and 2023–2024). A total of 1722 fights were analyzed: Early Era (2003–2004; n = 77), Transition Era (2013–2014; n = 813), and Modern Era (2023–2024; n = 832). Action frequencies were recorded for six categories. Significant Strikes showed the largest temporal increase, rising by 125% among winners and by 225% among losers between the Early and Modern Eras. Generalized linear mixed models identified Significant Strikes as the strongest within-bout predictor of victory, followed by Total Strikes, whereas knockdowns showed no significant within-bout association. Logistic regression identified knockdowns as the strongest marginal correlate (OR = 2.48). A descriptive hierarchical ranking placed Knockdowns first, followed by Total Strikes, Significant Strikes, and Takedowns. Takedowns demonstrated declining importance, with winner–loser differences decreasing by 23% from the Early to the Modern Era. Submission Attempts showed modest importance (12.8%), whereas Sweeps remained negligible (0.4%). These findings suggest substantial changes in UFC fighting strategy, with an increased emphasis on striking-based actions associated with victory. Nevertheless, grappling-related actions collectively accounted for a meaningful proportion of the combined importance ranking, indicating that modern MMA reflects an integration of striking and grappling rather than a simple replacement of one with the other. Although striking proficiency has become increasingly important, defensive grappling skills remain a baseline requirement.
