INVESTIGATION OF THE ANTIMICROBIAL AND ANTICANCER EFFECT OF THE PLANTS CONSOLIDA ORIENTALIS (GAY) SCHROD., AESCULUS HIPPOCASTANUM L., AND SYRINGA VULGARIS L.
Objective: This study was designed to investigate the anticancer effects of ethanolic extracts of Consolida orientalis, Aesculus hippocastanum, and Syringa vulgaris on the C6 glioma cell line and the antimicrobial effect on pathogen microorganisms.Material and Method: Strains used in the study were obtained from the Medical Microbiology Laboratory of Sivas Cumhuriyet University Hospital. Plant extracts were evaluated using microdilution broth method for antimicrobial activity. Anticancer activity was assessed via XTT assay for C6-glioma and HT-22 cell lines. Chemical composition of plant extracts characterized using GC-MS analysis.Result and Discussion: The MIC values of the microbial strains ranged from 5 to >20 mg/ml, according to the findings. The extracts showed no activity against Candida albicans and Pseudomonas aeruginosa at the 20 mg/ml. The effective doses of the plant extracts on the C6 glioma were calculated using the IC₅₀ method, values in the range of 186–500 μg/ml. The cytotoxic effect of the extracts on the HT-22 healthy cell line was found to exceed 500 µg/ml in extracts other than C. orientalis. The lowest MIC value was observed in S. vulgaris extract, and the lowest IC50 value in A. hippocastanum extract.
