High Leukocyte Count Interfering with Immunohematology Workup: A Case Report
Immunohematological testing is a basic fundamental test for safe transfusion practice. But in some instances, the patient's physiological or pathological factors may interfere with these serological testing.Markedly elevated blood cells are one among the blood parameters, particularly in hematopathology patients, that can cause discrepancies in blood grouping and compatibility testing.Excess leukocytosis may cause pseudoagglutination, rouleaux formation, and interference with immunohematology testing. We report a case of chronic lymphocytic leukemia with high white blood cell (WBC) count (7,20,000/µL) impeding the pretransfusion work-up.Appropriate corrective measures, standard operating procedures (SOPs) for performing tests in similar kind of cases can prevent difficulties in the workup and also in transfusion practice.
