A New Beginning: Launching the Journal of Transfusion and Immunohematology

It gives us great pride and happiness to introduce the first issue of the Journal of Transfusion and Immunohematology. This journal has come into being from a simple yet strong belief that the fields of transfusion medicine and immunohematology, although often working behind the scenes in patient care, deserve a dedicated space in Indian medical literature.Every day, in thousands of hospitals and blood centers throughout India, blood is collected, tested, processed, and given to patients to save their lives.A woman suffering from postpartum bleeding, a child with thalassemia who needs regular transfusions, an accident victim taken to surgery, or a cancer patient undergoing chemotherapy-all of these individuals rely on a safe and timely supply of blood.Behind each blood unit that reaches a patient is a long process of scientific and technical work, such as blood group typing, cross-matching, infection screening, component separation, and careful quality checks. This work forms the core of transfusion medicine and immunohematology.Despite its central role in healthcare, this field has not always received enough attention in Indian journals compared to other, more visible clinical specialties.Much of the excellent work being done by blood bank officers, transfusion medicine specialists, immunohematologists, and researchers across the country has not had an adequate platform.Studies on rare blood groups, donor screening, innovations in component therapy, and reflections on patient blood management are often published in journals that are not focused on this subject. We feel it is time to change that. This journal aims to be a home for this work-a space where professionals from blood banks, hospitals, research institutions, and academic centers across India can share their findings, experiences, and ideas with others who deeply understand this field. We hope to cover the entire scope of this specialty. This includes basic immunohematology, such as blood group serology and antibody identification, as well as clinical transfusion practice, which involves how doctors decide whether and how much blood to transfuse. We will also focus on blood safety and screening for infections that can be transmitted through transfusion-an area of particular importance because of India's large and diverse population.Blood component therapy and apheresis-the science of separating and using specific blood components such as platelets or plasma-will also be covered here.Quality management and accreditation in blood banks, along with donor recruitment, retention, and donor safety, are equally important topics we wish to explore.Rare blood groups and immunohematological challenges reported from Indian patients will be welcomed. We also hope to feature new technologies and automation in transfusion services, since these tools and machines are continually changing how blood banks operate.
