Generative drawing systems and emergent spiral formation
Emergent Spirals: Generative Drawing Systems and Emergent Spiral Formation is a practice-based research paper investigating how complex spiral structures can emerge through the repeated application of a simple manual drawing procedure. Developed through sustained studio research at Studio Irises, New Chandigarh, the study examines drawing as a generative system in which global spatial organisation arises from local interactions between iterative watercolor brushstrokes rather than from predetermined composition. The paper positions manual drawing within contemporary discussions of generative art, emergence, rule-based systems, and artistic research. Through methodological reflection, theoretical context, and a series of case studies, it demonstrates how repetition, gesture, material behaviour, and environmental conditions collectively influence the formation of emergent spatial structures. Rather than presenting finished artworks alone, this publication documents the underlying research process, procedural framework, and observations that informed the Spiral Field series. It is intended as a permanent scholarly record of an ongoing investigation into drawing as a form of visual research and embodied generative practice.
