Updated model-based abundance estimates of pelagic false killer whales in Hawaiian waters and the broader central Pacific

False killer whales (Pseudorca crassidens) are broadly distributed in pelagic waters of the central Pacific, where they depredate and are vulnerable to bycatch in commercial longline fisheries. To support the assessment and management of the Hawaiʻi pelagic false killer whale population, we estimated the abundance of the pelagic false killer whales in Hawaiian waters and the broader central Pacific using spatially-explicit habitat-based density modeling.
