Interfacial Superspreading‐Induced Underoil Adhesive via Adaptive Displacement and Assembly

ABSTRACT Robust underoil adhesives are critical for maintaining the safety and sealing performance of oil infrastructure, but oil's low surface energy and high viscosity hinder strong adhesion by trapping an interfacial oil layer. We report an interfacial superspreading‐induced (ISI) adhesive formed by self‐adaptive assembly of an emulsion precursor at the oil‐solid interface. It superspreads on oily substrates within 180 ms and crosslinks in 20 s. The ISI adhesive achieves underoil adhesion strengths up to 11.37 ± 0.50 MPa and adheres effectively to various substrates in emulsion, water, and air. Confocal microscopy and in situ Raman spectroscopy show that the precursor displaces the retained oil layer, allowing direct substrate contact. This strategy offers a versatile solution for emergency repair of subsea pipelines and oil tank sealing under challenging conditions.
