Is Home a Haven or a Headache? A Systematic Review of Family Factors and Study Weariness Among Middle School Students

This systematic literature review (SLR) investigates how family factors shape study weariness among middle school students, addressing a gap in comprehensive reviews of familial dynamics. Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search of Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar was conducted for peer-reviewed studies published between 2021 and 2025. Of the 691 records identified, 26 met the inclusion criteria. Thematic analysis identified two dimensions: Supportive Family Factors (emotional support, parental involvement, and communication) and Adverse Family Dynamics (conflict, neglect, and aggression). Evidence indicates that supportive factors are associated with reduced study weariness and greater academic engagement, whereas adverse dynamics are associated with increased burnout and disengagement. The review highlights the need for integrative frameworks that capture the interplay between family systems and adolescent well-being. It contributes by synthesizing relational, emotional, and environmental influences and provides evidence-based recommendations, including family counseling and parent–teacher collaboration. Research gaps remain, particularly the limited number of longitudinal and cross-cultural studies, underscoring the need for further investigation of family-centered mechanisms associated with the mitigation of study weariness.
