Self-Powered Piezoelectric Water Sensing and Treatment: An Open Research Program for Global Water Access

Two billion people lack access to safely managed drinking water, and waterborne diseases kill approximately 485,000 people annually, predominantly children under five. This open research program (CC0, public domain) addresses that crisis with flow-powered piezoelectric in-pipe technology — but this version corrects the central claim of v1.0. What changed: Version 1.0 presented flow-powered ultrasonic cavitation purification as near-deployment, including an estimated pathogen kill rate and a "no failure mode" claim. Internal review found the v1.0 energy budget does not close: harvestable flow-vibration energy is of the order of milliwatts, while effective cavitation treatment requires 10–100 watts per litre-per-minute — a gap of three to four orders of magnitude against the literature v1.0 itself cited. Those claims are withdrawn. No pathogen-removal performance has been demonstrated, and no device based on this concept should be deployed as a barrier for drinking water. What this program now builds: Track One, the Water Witness — a flow-powered in-pipe sensing and verification cartridge (flow status, relative turbidity and dissolved-solids change, temperature, treatment-stage verification) that runs comfortably inside the demonstrated milliwatt budget. It does not purify water; it tells communities and NGOs about the water so proven treatment (chlorination, boiling, filtration, UV) can be applied and checked. Track Two retains flow-powered treatment as an open research question, with a pre-committed validation protocol: no kill-rate figures will appear in this program's documents before independent challenge testing with quantified log-reduction, published regardless of outcome. Patents 44 (AU 2026902657) and 44A (AU 2026902658) remain dedicated to the public. Everything remains CC0 — the correction is published as openly as the concept was.
