Silk biomaterials for precision medicine: From silk science to medical engineering
Silk biomaterials, particularly Bombyx mori silk fibroin (SF) biomaterials, have emerged as a versatile platform for biomedical applications owing to their inherent biocompatibility, tunable hierarchical structure, excellent processability, and facile functionalization. Recent advances in silk science and medical engineering have enabled precise medical monitoring and intervention using SF biomaterials by integrating the molecular design, structural organization, and processing strategies. Herein, we provide an overview of these advances and discuss the applications of SF biomaterials in tissue engineering, drug delivery, and bioelectronic devices, highlighting the potential for structural and functional design and fabrication based on SF building blocks.
