Resonance-engineered Ti3C2Tx MXene metasurface for ultra-broadband absorption-dominated green electromagnetic interference shielding

The rapid advancement of information technologies necessitates the development of adaptive and green electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials capable of real-time response, high efficiency, and minimal secondary reflection. Here, we report a scaled Ti3C2Tx MXene-based Multi-arm Jointed-cross (S-MXJC) metasurface that achieves ultrabroadband, absorption-dominated green EMI shielding, with a shielding effectiveness (SE) exceeding 83.78 dB and an average green index (gs) of 64.55 across the 8.2-12.4 GHz (X-band) frequency range. The strategic scaling of meta-atoms enables the distribution of resonances over a broad frequency range, while precise capacitive-inductive coupling ensures impedance matching with free space, thereby suppressing the secondary reflections. Utilizing the high electrical conductivity (σ ~ 105 S/m) and intrinsic multi-scale polarization losses of Ti3C2Tx MXene, the gradient metasurface maintains a high gs value across the entire frequency range, confirming the continuous absorption-dominated behaviour. Furthermore, electromagnetic equivalent circuit modelling (ECM), validated by full-wave CST simulations, elucidates the underlying mechanism by which the distributed sheet resistance of Ti3C2Tx MXene synergizes with S-MXJC resonance to reconcile high conductivity with absorption dominance. This work establishes a flexible and lightweight metasurface platform that delivers high-efficiency, broadband green EMI shielding, offering a promising pathway for next-generation flexible electronic systems. The rapid advancement of information technology necessitates the development of adaptive and green electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials. Here, a scaled Ti3C2Tx MXene-based multi-arm jointed-cross metasurface achieves ultrabroadband, absorption-dominated green EMI shielding.
