A Reflection on Epistemic Interpretation and Just Conversion of Heterogeneous Values in Generative Relational Systems
Institutions respond to relationships, opportunities, and other heterogeneous values through money, standardized allocations, and public acts of recognition. Such responses involve distinct responsibilities: interpreting what matters in a particular history and justifying the response authorized on that basis. This paper develops the distinction through a generative relational account of situated significance. A proposed exchange of RMB 10,000 for withdrawal from an academic collaboration establishes the need to interpret both association and money through their practical uses, reciprocal conditions, and supported futures. The argument distinguishes recognition, interpretation, comparison, commensuration, and conversion, and examines failures of omission, inappropriate abstraction, and wrongful exclusion from inquiry. Controlled cases show that responsible interpretation can accompany an unjust response, while materially adequate provision can coexist with an independent interpretive wrong. Conversion is assessed through its purpose, grounds of entitlement, medium, alternatives, authority, and scope of closure. An unrestored remainder can be acknowledged within a justified response without establishing unlimited compensation or requiring the recreation of a relationship. Legal remedies supply a sustained application, including a bounded reading of English professional-negligence reasoning and the 2010 UNIDROIT Principles. Public factual governance, environmental deliberation, and capital-mediated consumption test the framework's broader reach. A formal appendix clarifies decisions across several warranted interpretations without positing a universal quantity of value. The contribution is an account of distinct but interacting duties, with inquiry calibrated to the decision's purpose and with remedial finality separated from claims of complete restoration. The framework remains a normative proposal; its constructed cases supply neither causal estimates nor a general theory of fair conversion rates.
