My Analytic Romance: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Told from the analysand’s perspective, this essay explores the paradox of analytic love through the author’s first-person account of her seven-year training analysis—a treatment both transformative and boundary-crossing. Structured into three parts—The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly—it examines how attachment, rupture, and repair operate when love exceeds the analytic frame. By writing as an analysand, the author gives voice to a perspective largely absent—and sorely missed—from psychoanalytic discourse. Speaking from this silenced position, the author illuminates how transgression and care can coexist within analytic work, even fruitfully. Ultimately, the paper suggests that psychoanalysis is less a method for curing through love than an ongoing means for understanding and surviving love’s limits.
