Revisiting temple tanks and stepwells: a values-based inquiry of water structures in Satara, Maharashtra
Water structures of Mahārāṣṭra hold spiritual, historic, and environmental significance. This paper explores perceived values (tangible and intangible) as key indicators of human associations with water structures. It assesses users’ perceptions for their conservation. The methodology is based on a literature review and on-site interviews. It also includes the development of the Value Assessment Scale to measure values associated with water structures. Using this scale, a perceptual survey of 150 participants was conducted at two water structures at Sātārā in March 2024. The paper discusses perceived values of these water structures rooted in social memory, ritual significance, and ecological wisdom.
