Managing Crisis Counselling and Intervention in Education: Challenges Experienced by Teachers in South African Township Schools

Crisis counselling and intervention have become critical components of school practice globally, with particular urgency in contexts characterised by systemic inequalities, socio-economic adversity, and high levels of violence. In South African township schools, teachers are increasingly expected to act as first responders to learner crises despite limited training, scarce resources, and weak structural support systems. This paper examines the challenges faced by teachers in providing crisis counselling and intervention in township schools through a systematic literature review of national and international scholarship. Key challenges identified include resource shortages, inadequate teacher preparation, socio-economic and environmental stressors, stigma surrounding mental health, and inconsistent policy implementation. Comparative insights from countries such as China, Germany, and Canada highlight both shared and context-specific challenges, underscoring the global relevance of the issue. The findings indicate that while teachers play a pivotal role in mitigating the psychosocial impact of crises on learners, their effectiveness is constrained by structural and contextual barriers. The paper concludes by recommending the deployment of specialised mental health professionals in schools, teacher training and reskilling programmes, community and parental engagement, and the creation of safer school environments through multi-sectoral collaboration. Addressing these challenges is essential for ensuring that township schools can provide not only academic instruction but also psychosocial support conducive to learners' emotional resilience, well-being, and academic success.
